Swiss vignette

A vignette is mandatory on all highways in Switzerland. This also applies to trailers and caravans. There is only one kind of vignette, a year vignette, which is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year.

For which vehicles is the Swiss vignette mandatory?

All motor vehicles and trailers with a maximum allowed total weight of 3,500 kilograms are required to have a vignette. Motor vehicles of which the maximum allowed total weight exceeds 3,500 kilograms (trucks, buses and heavy campers) fall under a different fee for freight traffic, which is dependent on kilometres.

Swiss vignette for trailers and vehicles without a windshield

Trailer wagons that are pulled by a personal vehicle, like trailers and caravans, need their own vignette, in addition to the vignette for the leading vehicle. On trailer wagons, the vignette needs to be placed in an easily accessible and non-interchangeable location.

On vehicles without a windshield, like motor bikes and certain old-timers, the Swiss vignette needs to be placed in an easily accessible and non-interchangeable location.

Correctly applying the Swiss vignette

The vignette needs to be undamaged and attached to the inside of the windshield, on the left side or behind the rear-view mirror. The Swiss vignette needs to be placed in such a way that it is easily readable from the outside, so it cannot be placed, for example, behind a dark line in the windshield.

The vignette needs to be attached directly to the windshield, without the use of suction cups, special foils, adhesive patches, etcetera. If the vignette is not attached directly to the windshield, it is not valid.

If you drive around without a vignette, with a damaged vignette or with a vignette that has not been correctly applied, you will be fined Sfr. 200 in addition to the cost of a new vignette.

  • No restitution is made of used vignettes
  • The vignette is also valid for a motor bike
  • This vignette is not valid for vehicles weighing more than 3.500 kg
  • If you drive through Switzerland with a caravan or trailer, you will need an additional vignette for your caravan or trailer
  • The vignette is valid from 1 December 2013 to 31 January 2015
